On top of our monthly art shows, Unsigned concert series and brewery events like Roundhouse Craft Beer Festival and Oktoberfest; Steam Whistle hosts over 250 events a year ranging from weddings to corporate parties. Below is a  guest post by Lindsay Munro at KANETIX giving an insight into the Kanetix Festivus themed party and offering up tips on ensure that your next party is a success. Read on…

Throwing a good party is like baking a good cake – you need to mix all the right ingredients together with a dash of love and a sprinkle of luck in order to create a masterpiece that everyone wants a piece of. When it came to planning the annual staff party at KANETIX this year, the social committee (fondly known as the K-Crew) nailed the recipe for the perfect party and it all started with selecting Steam Whistle as the venue.

Since sharing is caring, we thought we’d reveal the five ingredients to help you make your next party a success.

1. Theme

A theme is key because it sets the tone for the party and the activities that take place. Now, KANETIX doesn’t throw your average corporate party. Inspired by the much loved sitcom Seinfeld, we host an event called Festivus each year.

For those who don’t know the intricacies of the fictitious holiday, Festivus involves a dinner and an unadorned aluminum Festivus pole. It also includes practices such as the Airing of Grievances and Feats of Strength – which brings me to ingredient number two, sumo suits.

2. Sumo Suits

Blowing off a little steam after work goes back centuries, so we gave KANETIX employees the chance to do just that. On theme with Festivus, we rented Sumo Suits from Biggun Entertainment to cover off Feats of Strength. The suits didn’t cost much to rent for the evening, but they certainly made a big impact – no pun intended.

3. Photo Booth

Shout out to those who remember counting out loonies and cramming themselves into photo booths at the mall! Playing off nostalgia, the addition of a photo booth gave party attendees the chance to dress up and let loose. We dug through our Halloween costume bins and children’s play clothes to put together a collection of props that Mr. Dressup would be envious of.

Luckily, we have a few passionate photography hobbyists on staff who made the photo magic happen, which made this addition very affordable.

Even without a photographer, setting up a dedicated area with a back drop and props at your next shindig will encourage photos, and surely, Instagram and social sharing of them.

4. Cupcakes

Who doesn’t love cupcakes? We ordered up custom branded cakes from Prairie Girl Bakery here in Toronto and they were to die for. Delivered in individual boxes, attendees who didn’t have room for dessert could easily bring them home for a treat the next day.

5. Great Beer

Best part about Steam Whistle as a party venue? It’s the home of great local beer at an even greater price. Attendees also had the opportunity to participate in tours of the brewery throughout the evening.
