Want a unique pub experience in Guelph? The Baker Street Station is your pick.

A great traditional yet modern pub in Guelph includes a fresh menu, a classic atmosphere and a modern flair.

Here’s a Q&A with Dave Clancy (owner) at Baker Street Station.

How would you describe Baker Street Station to someone who’s never been there before?

The Baker Street Station is a unique pub experience. We wanted to create a true public house and we think we’ve done a pretty good job. It’s the kind of place that you can visit on your own and end up meeting all kinds of people, or come with a group for a pretty good night out. We’re fans of creativity, innovation and tradition all at the same time. We tried to make the inside feel like a traditional pub with a bit of flare and our food and beer selections follow that same mantra. Tradition with something new or something awesome added in to make you go, WHOA! We try to bring that to the table in everything we do.

How did the idea for the restaurant originate?

We were in the right place at the right time. With a history in the restaurant business, and 2 of our 4 owners from Guelph, when the iconic building on Baker Street became available we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make a dream come true. We wanted to bring a new level of creativity and uniqueness to the idea of what a pub is in Guelph.

What is your background in the food industry?

All four of the Baker Street Station owners started their working years as teenagers in restaurants as dishwashers or servers. For Caitlin, Dave and Shannon, restaurants paid for their university years and gave us the basis for management and front of house. For Justin, restaurants informed his post-secondary education, completing a diploma in food and beverage management before bouncing around kitchens throughout Canada and ending up back in Guelph. Baker, our head chef, started his career at a young age, working his way to the Lake Louise Fairmont Hotel by the age of 18. Baker then trained at Niagara College in Culinary Management. After graduating, he traveled through kitchens of Western Canada eventually finding himself in Melbourne, Australia for a year before settling back in Guelph and joining the Baker Street Station team.

What are some must try dishes and pairings?

We’ve just recently released our Summer 2014 menu and like proud parents with multiple children, we love each dish. But just like parents, we’ve got secret favourites. Our must try appetizer would probably be Pork Carnita & Kimchi Tacos. For mains, the Pork Belly Mac & Cheese with its aged cheddar sauce and raclette cheese. As well, our multiple varieties of Wings (Sea Salt & Cracked Pepper, Bourbon Honey Garlic, Cajun, & Vindaloo Butter) are dishes that we feel everyone HAS to try!

What are some unique upcoming events and promotions you have coming up?

Two words. Polar. Beer. We’ve just added frozen beer to our menu. We read about it coming to Toronto and being installed in Japanese restaurants and we thought, “Hey, we want that!” So, we got it. We’re the first craft beer pub in Ontario, potentially Canada and just maybe the world to have one of these and we’re definitely the only place in Guelph. We’ll be rocking out frosty top craft beers all summer along with Baker Street Blizzards.
