Beginning on October 3, 2007, the Steam Whistle Brewing Art Gallery is hosting a joint exhibit to highlight the works of Toronto-based artists Anthony Valin and Adam Matak. Featuring an eclectic pairing of Valin's uniquely inspired faces, and Matak's consistent re-contextualization of art as an object, the exhibit will run for the entire month of October.

Anthony Valin
From doodling in class to airbrushing large scale murals, Anthony Valin has been creating since a young age. Before long, he began to focus his distinctive pieces on one aspect of the human figure, the face, and has since found ceaseless inspiration simply from the unique assemblage of people that make up Toronto.
With inspiration also coming from pop culture, graffiti and music,

Valin wants people to appreciate his work for what it is. "People often tend to ask, 'What does this piece mean to you', he claims. "I'll be there thinking, Who cares what it means to me, what does it mean to you?"

Adam Matak
Adam Matak's work provides a distinct contrast, emphasizing themes such as art institutions, cultural artifacts and the narratives that surround and connect them. He integrates what some may consider 'low art', (comics, stenciling and graffiti art) with 'high art' forms (Modernist colour field painting, and images of historic and contemporary art). Having spent the last ten years working with museums and galleries across North America, Matak's own art now incorporates a precise response to the work of other artists, re-contextualizing both earlier and contemporary pieces. His interest lies in the art itself, foregrounding the social behaviour of making, buying and selling art, as well as what it means to have and look at a piece.

The Gallery Opening will be on Wednesday October 3rd at 6pm. Please RSVP to rsvp@steamwhistle.ca
The exhibition will run until Sunday October 28th.

Steam Whistle Gallery
Steam Whistle Brewing hosts monthly art shows and exhibitions in our Retail & Hospitality area in an effort to support local creative talent. Although many are established artists, some exhibitors are showing for the first time. Steam Whistle does not charge rent for our gallery space, nor do we take commission on any works that sell. At the close of each show, the artist donates one piece of their choice to our collection - an arrangement very agreeable to all.

All exhibitions are open free to the public Monday to Saturday 12noon to 6pm and Sunday 12noon to 5pm.
