Steam Whistle brings back UNSIGNED Vancouver – a concert series in support of Canadian independent music artists. The Unsigned series started in Toronto five years ago, making its way to Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver with the goal of giving back and helping the growth of Canada’s indie music community. Thursday November 7th 2013, Fine Times, Facts and Van Damsel will take over the stage in Vancouver at Biltmore Cabaret. Doors open at 8pm and tickets are only $5 at the door with 100% of proceeds going back to the community through Music BC.
About the Bands:
**Van Damsel will no longer be appearing in tonight's show
Fine Times is the songwriting partnership of Matthew Moldowan and Jeffrey Josiah Powell. Recalling the sounds of Tears for Fears and OMD, the duo has been featured on Noisey, Interview Magazine, and Exclaim. So far in 2013, the group has shared bills with Vampire Weekend, STRFKR, and The Ruby Suns, as well as performed to capacity crowds at SXSW, NXNE, CMW, Squamish Valley Music Festival, Rifflandia, and Reeperbahn Festival. Their debut album – recorded with Howard Redekopp (Tegan and Sara) and released on Light Organ Records in late 2012 – broke the !earshot National Top 50 campus chart and garnered nominations for "SiriusXM Emerging Artist of the Year" (Indie Awards) and "Pop Recording of the Year" (WCMA).
Part of Vancouver’s electro underground, Facts are putting the finishing touches on what has been a fantastic debut year. Their first full-length record “Like a Living Being”, released in the Spring of 2012 to a buzzing local reception, garnered positive reviews in the print media (The Georgia Straight), and respected blogs across the country (Vancouver’s Winnie Cooper, Toronto’s Indie Machine), propelling them into a highly coveted spot in Music BC’s Peak Performance Project Top 20, alongside some of BC’s most eligible talents. The young band also completed a Canada-wide tour in the fall, featuring an appearance at Live at Squamish, where they shared the stage with The Tragically Hip, Chromeo, and Mother Mother.
Facts have found a ripe blend of electronic dance rhythms, synth tones, spacey guitars and layered vocals that stand in stark contrast to much of the folk-rooted Canadian indie scene. Their concerts frequently surprise audiences, overruling the stereotype of produced electronic music with a lively and dynamic display of real time performances that blurs the line between synthetic and organic, and inspires audiences to get up and dance. The result is a romantic, humanized incarnation of electronica that both excites and entices.
beekeeper is an indie post-pop power trio from Vancouver. They play danceable, singable, thinkable tunes. They meld dissonance and odd time signatures with beautiful pop hooks and male/female three-part harmonies. The live show is quirky, unpredictable, and musically satisfying. It is not rare for sets to end with the entire audience on stage.
