Steam Whistle - Do One Thing Really, Really Well

Unsigned #28

Steam Whistle is an active supporter of independent Canadian musicians and the craft brewery’s UNSIGNED concert series is now in its seventh year running. On January 24th, Steam Whistle will host Unsigned #28, celebrating Canadian indie music. The show will be hosted in the Toronto Brewery’s Beer Hall and will feature Bravestation, Ark Analog, and Doom Squad. Doors open at 8pm and admission is only $5 at the door with all proceeds from ticket sales going back to the community through the Artists Health Alliance.

About the Bands:

Bravestation is brothers Devin and Derek Wilson alongside childhood friend Jeremy Rossetti. Together, they began creating music in the City of the 1000 Islands several years before relocating to Toronto and adopting the moniker Bravestation. The name is derived from the titles of Aldous Huxley’s novel Brave New World and Robert J. Hasting’s inspirational essay, The Station. The group's most recent release IV draws upon themes written in these evocative literary works through lyrics that shape fantasy and reality into a speculative fiction over top of colourful and winding song structures. While ethereal vocals, spaced-out guitars, intricate percussion and peculiar synths have always been characteristics of the band's sonic identity; the four tracks found on IV are decidedly more electronic and beat-oriented than their predecessors continuing Bravestation's audible metamorphosis, mixing elements of R&B, New Wave and Electronic music into an atmospheric pop landscape.

Ark Analog
“Ark Analog is billed simply as ‘dance music from Toronto.’ Their debut single is called "Make Me a Mirror," and it's a blippy electronic pop song that sounds a bit like the synth-sparkled soundtrack of a outer-space-themed videogame from the '80s. It was jointly written and produced by Todd and Werb, while Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys mixed the track and assisted with production.” – Exclaim

Doom Squad
Dark new agers DOOMSQUAD re-code the electronic music narrative with a more worldly and cosmological presence than the genre would normally dictate. Their songs are rich in variance and full of vividness, spanning across their entire debut LP Kalaboogie. Drawing in guitar, flute, percussion and synth, the Montreal and Toronto-based siblings Allie, Jaclyn and Trevor Blumas act as aural anthropologists, teaming relics of cross cultural traditions like chanting and repetition over seismic ripples of deep bass. Doomsquad’s mixing of influences leaves you feeling awakened.
