Steam Whistle hosts Unsigned Calgary!
Steam Whistle hosts UNSIGNED Calgary – a concert series in support of Canadian independent music artists. The Unsigned series started in Toronto five years ago, making its way to Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver with the goal of giving back and helping the growth of Canada’s indie music community. Saturday October 27th 2012, Chron Goblin, Shooting Guns and Witchstone will take over the stage at The Palomino in Calgary. Doors open at 9pm and tickets are only $5 at the door with 100% of proceeds going to CJSW – Calgary’s Independent Radio.
About the Bands:
Formed in 2009 by four university chums, Chron Goblin broke into the Calgary music scene with the release of their self-titled EP in April of 2010. The guys are eager to make a mark with their unique blend of crushing riffs, soaring melodic vocals, and head-banging rhythms. While some might call them stoner rock, others hard rock, metal, or punk, Chron Goblin draws from all of these genres to create a contemporary rock n’ roll sound described as “musical adrenaline incarnate” by Christine Leonard (FFWD Weekly). After opening for the Devin Townsend Project on December 2nd 2011 at The Gateway, Chron Goblin is poised for success in 2012 with more tour dates, local shows, a music video and a new album in the works. Get your “punk-metal-merriment” on.
Recently recognized on the Polaris Music Prize Long List, Shooting Guns are hard at work fortifying the heavy end of the psychedelic spectrum. Hailing from the subarctic wasteland of Saskatoon, SK, they haunt the foggy moor between Sabbath-styled doom riffery (Electric Wizard, Sleep) and heavy pulse-riding kraut-rock (Neu!, Circle, Wooden Shjips). Centered around elephantine riffs, these delay-soaked songs rumble and hiss with analog synth-conjured monstrosities which surge to devour frequency ranges beyond the upper and lower ranges available to even the heaviest doom outfits. In addition to their debut eight-song full-length album, Born To Deal in Magic: 1952-1976, the band just released two new split 7”s this spring (with Nottingham UK’s The Cult of Dom Keller and Edmonton’s Krang). Having played alongside Bison B.C., Mares of Thrace, Quest for Fire, Lavagoat, and Black Mastiff, as well as showcasing at the Sled Island Music Festival, the band is pleasantly surprised to find that their spectacle is rapidly attracting a cult of barbarian metal-heads, indie hipsters, Neanderthals, nerds, and the well-dressed ladies who scare them.
One need not venture far to identify the band's influences. Witchstone unapologetically taps the 'Sabbathian' vein, akin to 90' doom revival bands Sleep and Electric Wizard. Witchstone's music is best described as a bubbling cauldron of churning guitar tones and volcanic yet melodic vocals atop thunderous crashing drums, with an electronic synth/fx overlay that distills the sound in a spacey psychedelic resonance.
